As many as 15 to 20% of the population suffer from Irritable Bowel Syndrome, or IBS. The condition causes many intestinal complaints and greatly impacts quality of life. Unfortunately, there is still no cure to date.
However, the FODMAP diet can provide relief from the symptoms. FODMAP stands for 'Fermentable Oligosaccharides, Disaccharides, Monosaccharides, and Polyols'. It is these FODMAPs that often cause complaints. They are poorly absorbed in the small intestine, leading to undigested material reaching the large intestine, which results in symptoms.
The FODMAP diet consists of three phases: the elimination phase, the reintroduction phase, and the stabilization phase. During the elimination phase, high-FODMAP foods are completely avoided to reduce intestinal complaints. Then, in the reintroduction phase, various foods are gradually reintroduced to determine which specific FODMAPs cause individual complaints. Finally, in the stabilization phase, a personalized diet plan is developed based on individual tolerance for FODMAPs.
At Damhert, we offer a wide range of functional foods, including our gluten-free, lactose-free, vegetarian, fibre fit, and organic ranges, to meet the needs of consumers. Many of our products are also suitable for a FODMAP diet in the strictest phase (the elimination phase).
